Introduction to the Topic: Show the students a few of the books. You can use a document camera to put pictures in the books on the Smartboard. Ask them what the voice of each book is. Then explain that you can become a better writer by reading and books can help you to understand voice in your own writing.
Procedures:
Show the students some other books and have them determine the central voice of the story. Then have them think about stories that they have read that have a strong voice.
Show them the Smartboard file or come up with your own example of voice.
Pass out paper and drawing materials. Have the students come up with their own example of voice and draw a poster that exhibits it.
Assessment Options:
Have the students present their posters to the class.
Students can get into pairs and show each other their posters. Have one student try to determine the other's voice.
