Recommended Grade Level(s): 4-8
Goals: Students will be able to write and illustrate ideas on the horror genre.
Materials: Smartboard, horror books, paper, drawing materials.
Introduction to the Topic: Write the word horror on the board. Ask the students what comes to mind when they see this word. Create a brainstorm map of their ideas on the board.
Procedures:
Show the students some horror books and have them tell you why it falls into the horror genre.
Explore some websites on the Smartboard that are geared towards the genre. R.L. Stine is a beloved children's scary story writer and there are some great websites about him.

Pass out paper and drawing materials. Have the students create an original book cover for a horror novel. You may want to remind them to keep the pictures school appropriate.Assessment Options:
Students present their posters to the class.
Students get into pairs and share their work. They can rotate after a few minutes so that they can see several students' work.
Each student can act as a reporter and interview another student in the class as if the other student was an author with a new horror novel.
