Recommended Grade Level(s): 4-5 (Can be adjusted for older grades)
Goals: Students will be able to explain the Newbery Award and evaluate a book for worthiness of the award.
Materials: Smartboard, Newbery Award books, drawing materials, Newbery Award worksheet click for the Newbery Award worksheet.
Introduction to the Topic: Ask students what books they have enjoyed. Show the students some award winners and tell them a little about the plot. Tell the students that there is an award especially for books geared towards students their own age.
Procedures:
Put a list of Newbery winners on the Smartboard. See if the students have read any of the books. Click here for the ALA Newbery list.
Have the students brainstorm what they think are the reasons why these books have won the award. Put their ideas on the board.
Pass out the Newbery Award worksheet and drawing materials. Have the students think about a book that they feel should win.
Have the students use the worksheet to write and illustrate their choice of book.
Assessment Options:
Students present their choices to the class.
Students get into pairs and share their work. They can rotate after a few minutes so that they can see several students' work.
