Title: Dinosaurs and Fossils

Recommended Grade Level(s): 2-3 (Correlates to the 2nd Grade Reading Curriculum)

Goals: Students will examine dinosaurs and fossils and create a dinosaur that has similar characteristics to themselves.

Materials: Smartboard, paper, drawing materials, A Dinosaur Named After Me by Bernard Most, Dinos Rock mini-book worksheet, Click for the Dinos Rock Mini-book worksheet courtesy of StoryPlace.

Introduction to the Topic: Ask the students what they have learned about dinosaurs and fossils in class. Create a brainstorm map of their ideas on the board.

Procedures:

Use the fossil website to learn about how fossils are formed. Click to go to the How Fossils Are Formed website.

Put the Dinos Rock story on the Smartboard and read it as a class. Have the students participate in the decisions that need to be made in the story. Click for the Dinos Rock Story.

Print out copies of the worksheet and have students create their own dinosaur books.

Assessment Options:

Have students create their own dinosaur named after them. Put the pictures together to create a book or scan the pages, put them into a folder and turn them into a digital book.

Have the students put dinosaur bones in place on the Smartboard. Click to go to the Fossil Jigsaw Puzzle.
