Recommended Grade Level(s): 4-5 (Correlates to the 4th Grade Social Studies Curriculum)
Goals: Students will be able to examine Native American folktales and draw a Native American inspired design.
Materials: Smartboard, books on Native American folktales and culture, Native American folktale worksheet, pottery worksheet click to get pottery worksheet courtesy of Apples 4 the Teacher, click to get folktale worksheet.
Introduction to the Topic: Ask the students what they learned so far about Native American tribes and create a brainstorm chart on the board. Then tell students that they can learn more by looking outside of there textbook. Show the students the folktale books and give a short introduction to each.
Procedures:
Display the books that you showed the students. Students can work by themselves or with a partner to choose one of the books that they find interesting and look through it further.
Pass out the worksheets for them to record what they learn.
Have the students meet with students who worked with another book to share what they learned. Have the students rotate so that they get to meet with several others.
Put a book or two on a Native American tribe on each table. Pass out the pottery worksheets. Have the students design a pot based on the designs that they find in the book(s).
Assessment Options:
Have the students share their designs with each other.
Shout outs about what they learned.
