Title: Citing Sources in MLA Format

Recommended Grade Level(s): 7-8

Goals: Students will be able to cite sources using MLA.

Materials: Smartboard, books, paper, writing materials.

Introduction to the Topic: Ask students why it is wrong to steal.  Then discuss plagiarism is and why it is wrong. Tell the students that there is a way to use information in their reports and not steal someone else’s ideas.

Procedures:

Put the Teacher Tap website on the Smartboard and look at how to cite sources. Click to go to the Teacher Tap Citation Site.

As a class, come up with a basic format for citing according to MLA format. Use some books from the library and model how to cite sources.

Put a few books on each table. Have the students write citations for each book. Then have them switch books with another table.

Assessment Options:

Have tables get together and check their citations for accuracy.

Play an online citation game on the Smartboard as a class.
