Title: Evaluating Books

Recommended Grade Level(s): 3-5

Goals: Students will be able to evaluate books that they have read.

Materials: Smartboard or whiteboard, News worksheet, writing and drawing materials click to get news worksheet.

Introduction to the Topic: Ask students about their favorite books and why they like them.  Then ask students about books that they didn’t like and why. 

Procedures:

Brainstorm as a class reasons, or criteria, for a good book. Put the criteria on the Smartboard.

Have students think about a book that they have read recently. Then tell the students to look at the criteria to decide if the book fits the criteria for a good book.

Pass out the news worksheet so that the students can use it write a review of the book and create an illustration to go along with it. The students have to include the criteria in their review. You will have to change the name on the worksheet so that your school's name is on it.

Assessment Options:

Students share their reviews with the class.

Each student can act as a reporter and interview another student in the class.
