Goals: Students will be able to explain what an autobiography is and create one on their own.
Materials: Smartboard, books, drawing materials, comic strip worksheet click for the comic strip worksheet
Introduction to the Topic: Show the students Dav Pilkey's (the author of the Captain Underpants series) cartoon autobiography. Click here for his autobiography. When showing them, make sure to mention that he wrote it himself. Tell the students that they can learn about others by reading their life stories.
Procedures:
Show the students other autobiographies. Ask the students what is similar about all their books. Response should be that the people wrote them about themselves. See if any of the students know what this type of book is called. Write it on the board.
Go back to Dav Pilkey's autobiography and read at least the first couple of sections of it.
Pass out the comic strip worksheets. Have the students design their own comic strip autobiography.
Assessment Options:
Students present their autobiographies to the class.
Students get into pairs and share their work. They can rotate after a few minutes so that they can see several students' work.
