Title: What are Clouds?

Recommended Grade Level(s): 1-2 (Can be altered for older grades.  Correlates to the 1st Grade Reading Curriculum).

Goals: Students will be able to categorize clouds into different types.

Materials: Smartboard, The Cloud Book by Tomie DePaola, paper, photocopies of types of clouds, drawing materials.

Introduction to the Topic: Brainstorm as a class the reasons why clouds might be in the sky.  Then show them pictures of clouds on the Smartboard and have them think about why each type of cloud is in the sky.

Procedures:

Read sections from The Cloud Book. You can put the pictures under a document camera and show them on the Smartboard so that the students can see the pictures better. Discuss the reason why each type of cloud appears in the sky.

Have the students draw a type of cloud.

Place a picture of a different cloud on various tables. Let the students compare their drawings to the cloud pictures and put their drawing on the table they feel has the picture that is the closest to their drawing.

Assessment Options:

Show the pictures and drawings to the class. Have the students give a thumbs up if they agree that the drawing is similar to the picture or thumbs down if it is not.

Shout outs about what they learned.
