Title: What is in a Dewey Decimal Section?

Recommended Grade Level(s): 6-8

Goal(s): Students will be able to categorize topics into the various Dewey Decimal sections and explain some of the topics that can be found in each section.

Materials: Smartboard, nonfiction books, Dewey Decimal Section worksheets Click to get worksheet.

Introduction to the Topic: Choose a Dewey Decimal section for the students to examine. Show the students some books that can be found in that section, particularly new books that the students may not seen yet. Have the students then determine what information can be found in that section.

Procedures:

Display the books that you showed the students. Students can work by themselves or with a partner to choose one of the books that they find interesting and look through it further.

Pass out the worksheets for them to record what they learn. This worksheet is for the 500's section, but it can be changed for any section.

Have the students meet with students who worked with another book to share what they learned. Have the students rotate so that they get to meet with several others.

Assessment Options:

Have the students write the subject of their book on the board.
