Recommended Grade Level(s): 1-3 (Can be adjusted for Kindergarten)
Goal(s): Students will be able to model library etiquette and determine what actions are appropriate for the library.
Materials: Smartboard, The Shelf Elf by Jackie Mims Hopkins, paper, drawing materials, Golden Shelf Elf Certificate click to get certificate.
Introduction to the Topic: Read the beginning of The Shelf Elf. Stop after it mentions the Golden Shelf Elf Award. Ask the students if they would like to earn a Shelf Elf Award and tell them that you will be giving out certificates throughout the year for students who show good library manners.
Procedures:
Continue reading the Shelf Elf. Stop throughout the story to review good library manners.
Have the students tell library manner rules. List them on the Smartboard.
Pass out paper and drawing materials. Have students create a poster listing one of the rules and illustrating it.
End the class by reviewing library manners by reading No, No Never together. Click to go to the No, No, Never Website.
Assessment Options:
Have students show their posters to the class.
Shout outs about what they learned.
