Recommended Grade Level(s): 2-4
Goal(s): Students will be able to use a dictionary to look up words.
Materials: Smartboard, dictionaries, dictionary worksheet click to get the dictionary worksheet.
Introduction to the Topic: Put obscure, funny sounding words on the board. Have students try to guess what the words mean. Then explain to them that there is a way to find out what any word means.
Procedures:
Pull up a dictionary website on the Smartboard. You can use Dictionary.com or Merriam-Webster's Word Central.
Model how to read dictionary entries.
Scan a dictionary page or put a page under a document camera to show what the page looks like. Model how to use the guide words at the top of the page.
Pass out dictionaries and worksheets. Have students work along or in small groups to complete the worksheet.
Assessment Options:
Shout outs about what they learned.
Students write something they learned on the Smartboard.
