Title: Understanding the Dewey Decimal System

Recommended Grade Level(s): 5-8

Goal(s): Students will be able to explain the reason for the Dewey Decimal System, how it works, and what types of books can be found within each section.

Materials: Smartboard, nonfiction books, lined paper, writing materials.

Introduction to the Topic: Show students various types of nonfiction books that are popular to the library. Ask them where to find them. When they point to the nonfiction section, tell them that you can show them exactly where the books are so that they can find them on their own.

Work on a Dewey Decimal game as a class.

Have students create a chart. Using paper, they will make one column for book titles, one for call numbers, and one for Dewey sections. Give each table a few nonfiction books and have them fill in the chart. They can then meet with another table and exchange information.

Assessment Options:

Students will show their charts.

Students can play another Dewey Decimal game as a class.

Create a Dewey Decimal Bingo Game.
