Recommended Grade Level(s): 4-5 (Can be adjusted for older grades)
Goal(s): Students will be able to use an atlas to find geographical information.
Materials: Smartboard, atlases, Arizona and/or U.S. atlas worksheet, Google Earth program click to get Arizona atlas worksheet, click to get U.S. atlas worksheet.
Introduction to the Topic: Use the Smartboard to show students the school using Google Earth. This program is available for free at: Google Earth. Have the students pick some places to see. Then explain to the students that there are books in the library that also show you where places can be found.
Procedures:
Work on one of the online map activities as a class using the Smartboard. Use this time to model using a map.
Click to go to the United States map puzzle.
Click to go to Maps.com maps and map games.
Pass out atlases and atlas worksheets. Depending on what they have been studying in class, you can use either the U.S. or Arizona worksheet.
Assessment Options:
Use one of the online map puzzles or games to review.
Students can get into pairs and share their what they have learned.
