Recommended Grade Level(s): 1-2 (Can be adjusted for Kindergarten or older grades)
Goal(s): Students will be able to put words and books in alphabetical order, and find books on a shelf by the author's last name.
Materials: Smartboard, books, index cards with fiction call numbers on them. For Kindergarten, you can put only letters to make it easier.
Introduction to the Topic: Ask the students if they know how the stories in the libraries are put on the shelf. The older students may already know that they are alphabetized. You will have to explain to the younger students that they are put in alphabetical order by the author's last name. Ask the students who their favorite authors' are. Write the authors' names on the Smartboard, and circle the beginning of the last name.
Procedures:
Have students come up to the board and circle the beginning of the last names. You can even write students' names on the board and ask where you could find their book if they wrote one.
Show the students book spines and read the call numbers together. You can take a picture of the books with a scanner or document camera and put them on the Smartboard so that all of the students can see.
Hold spines under the document camera and have students read the call numbers.
Pass out the index cards to the students. Have them work at their tables to put the cards in order. After they have put them in order, they can exchange the cards with other tables.
Assessment Options:
