Title: Labeling the Library

Recommended Grade Level(s): 3-5 (Can be adjusted for older grades)

Goal(s): Students will be able to label a map of the library according to the different sections and call number prefixes.

Materials: Smartboard, library map, colored pencils click for a library map made using Smartboard software., click for the Smartboard version of the map.

Introduction to the Topic: Ask the students how often they need help finding books in the library. Then tell them that they can learn to find the books for themselves.

Procedures:

Show the students the map of the library on the Smartboard. You can make one using Smartboard notebook software or draw one and then scan it so that you can show it on the board. Pass out copies of the map to the students. Walk around the sections of library and review what they are.

Have the students label the library map according to the different sections. They can use a different colored pencil for each section.

After they are finished, put up a list of call number prefixes. Use the one attached to the Smartboard lesson in the materials section, or put them up on your own. Each table will divide the sections amongst the students. The students will scout the sections of the library to see what the call number prefix is for that section. They will then report back to the group, and each student will record it on their map.

Assessment Options:

Have each table come up with information about a section or two of the library according to the map.

Shout outs about what they learned.
