These standards apply to all foods offered in classrooms and vending sales.
All beverages, foods and vending machine selections offered on school
campuses shall comply with the following parameters.

BEVERAGES
No carbonated soda beverages allowed.

For Elementary students, juice must contain 100% fruit or vegetable juice
and be no more than an 8 ounce serving.

Milk must be fat free, low fat (1% milk fat), or reduced fat milk (2% milk
fat).  Flavored milk may contain no more than 4 grams of sugar per ounce.

FOODS
No more than 35% of the calories coming from total fat (with the exception
of nuts, seeds and reduced-fat cheese).

No more than 10% of the calories coming from saturated fat/trans fat (with
the exception of nuts, seeds and reduced-fat cheese).

No more than 35% of total weight of the food items may be derived from
sugar (excluding fruit and solid dairy products).

Foods must contain at least 1 gram of fiber.

Snack items should not exceed 600 mg of sodium.

FUNDRAISING GUIDELINES

ALL FOODS

Fundraising activities shall not compete with the Food and Nutrition
Department.

All food items being sold must come from a commercial business
(supermarket, restaurant) with an approved Maricopa County Health permit.
Food products sold cannot come from a residential kitchen.

The Food and Nutrition Department reserves the right to check the
fundraising operation for compliance of Maricopa County Health code,
Arizona Department of Education Nutrition Standards and Murphy School
District policies.

The fundraiser cannot take place anywhere on the school campus from the
beginning bell of the day to the last bell of the day.

AFTER HOURS BARBECUES/CARNIVALS

These functions need to be compliant with Maricopa County Health
Department.  In order to operate a BBQ/Carnival function where food is
being served, a County permit is needed.

The sponsoring group will be required to obtain their own Maricopa County
Health Permit to operate.  The fees for this permit range from $70 - $260 per
year depending on the type of permit. Any permit must also be accompanied
by a person who has become certified in an approved Maricopa County
sanitation course.  Access to a school kitchen will require the presence of a
Murphy School District Food Service Employee and an hourly labor fee will
apply.

Hire a catering company with an approved Maricopa County Permit to
service the function.  The vendor must possess the proper permit to cater a
barbecue/carnival.  The vendor must be completely self-reliant.  Caterer
must have all necessary supplies for the function and be able to comply with
Maricopa County regulations with regard to sanitation and safety.

FOOD IN THE CLASSROOM

These guidelines are established to insure safety and compliance with the
Maricopa County Health Department.  The County and District has strict
regulations about food being served at classroom parties or students being
rewarded with food and/or beverage products (i.e. pizza parties).
IT IS NOT ALLOWED!

Classroom parties can be held by any means of celebration other than
offering food/beverage products.  It is required that parents, teachers and
staff encourage student’s good behavior or celebrate birthdays/holidays with
other forms of reward such as stickers, social time and/or school supplies.

Implementing these standards successfully will help maintain children and
adolescent health and ensure that they area ready to learn.  In addition,
this will foster healthy school environments that are supporting parents
and teachers as they encourage children to establish healthy eating
behaviors which should be maintained throughout their lives.
